Elderly neighborhood policewoman allegedly poisoned by couple she took off the street
By Tracey Khan – The relatives of a female neighborhood police who died from poisoning are accusing a young couple who live with the woman of committing the crime.
Nanitoon Higgins, 68, succumbed days after she was admitted and treated for poisoning at the New Amsterdam hospital.
The elderly woman was living alone when she noticed a young couple searching tirelessly for a place to call home in her village so she decided to step in and help them by allowing the couple to stay on the upper flat of her two-story home for free. The couple hails from the Essequibo coast.
However; soon after, she realized that money was being taken from her bank account to shop online after visiting the bank so she confronted the only two people who had access to her home and they confessed but promised to later repay the good Samaritan.
But instead of keeping their word, they allegedly began to slowly poison the woman with the deadly substance gramoxone by pouring it in her tea. Higgins became suspicious after she suddenly became ill and discovered a bottle with what she believed was the poisonous substance. The woman took the bottle and tea that was prepared by the couple to the hospital for testing where she was admitted.
In a signed statement before her death, Higgins detailed the last days of her life and accused the couple of the crime.
The suspects were held by police but released on bail on Tuesday, February 20 after the post-mortem examination was inconclusive.
