Fishermen robbed; captain feared drowned
A search team is combing the Corentyne River for the body of a boat captain who is feared to have been drowned, following a robbery attack.
The captain and his two-man crew members were attacked and robbed of their catch and a 40hp Yamaha Engine on Tuesday about one mile in the Corentyne River, in the vicinity of Tain Settlement, Corentyne, Berbice.
According to police, the fishermen ventured out to sea to fish on Monday, May 15, at 16:00hrs in a wooden boat, powered by a 40hp Yamaha Engine.
At about 16:30hrs yesterday they were attacked and robbed of their valuables by two masked men, one armed with a cutlass.
It was further alleged, that the pirates after committing the crime, placed the victims into their (the pirates) boat and ordered them to jump overboard, which they did, but not before the captain Mahadeo Ramdyal called Chico, was struck to his head by one of the pirates with a cutlass.
The crew members alone managed to swim to a vessel anchored some 100 meters from the shore.
The missing captain is 44 years old and resides at Kilcoy/Chesney Squatting Area, Corentyne.
The investigation is in progress.
