Elderly couple burnt to death in fire set by bandits

An elderly couple of Good Hope, East Bank Essequibo perished last night (Sunday April, 17) in a fire which was reportedly lit by bandits during a botched robbery.

According to neighbors, the armed men invaded the couple’s home after mid-night and in an attempt to escape the bandit’s dread the couple locked themselves in a tightly grilled room. They men were unable to gain access to the couple and started the fire then escaped, leaving the two persons trapped.

The dead couple has been identified only as Jamila and Munair. They were both rice farmers.

Neighbors said they attempted to assist the husband and wife who were heard screaming for help.

    Detectives have today launched a murder investigation after tests revealed an elderly couple found in the burnt remains of their bungalow had been attacked before it was set alight.

    ‘We are supporting the family of the couple who died in Chidham and are working with colleagues from the fire service along with forensic and crime scene investigators to establish the circumstances.
