Former Health Minister Noel Blackman Arrested
Former Health Minister in Guyana Dr. Noel Blackman was taken off a Guyana bound plane on Sunday in New York arrested and arraigned in a Long Island Court. The authorities in New York say he prescribed an unusually high number of narcotic based prescription drugs. He was also alleged to have had around 30,000 US dollars in his suitcase.
US news reports state that records show he wrote 114 prescriptions in 2014 for about 3,800 oxycodone pills and nearly 2,500 prescriptions for about 365,000 pills last year.
The agents were tipped off that Blackman had planned to leave the US permanently.
Blackman served as Health Minister in the PNC administration prior to 1992 and founded HBTV channel 9. He is Chairman of the Georgetown Hospital.
Only late last year another Guyanese doctor Kevin Lowe was jailed for a similar office. Over the years Guyanese doctors or persons associated with them have been arrested for various offences connected to the prescription drug trade including Dilipsinghi Ramroop who was given a suspended sentence for bribing a federal official in connection to the trade.
