More fires today keep firemen busy
Firemen were kept busy all day today from Crane to Zeelught on the West Demerara to Tiger Bay in the city this afternoon. According to residents in the Tiger bay area the fire at the community centre at Queen and Hope Streets started just before five. The former community centre was largely unoccupied but housed 2 Customs brokers who used the lower flat to carry out their business. According to footballer Alpha Fletchman whose mother is the secretary of the Community group the fire may have started at the back of the building and whatever personal items the occupants had in the building went up in the flames that spread quickly.
The fire service already stretched thin was praised for confining the blaze to the one building. The businesses around included the Noral diesel service New Thriving Restaurant and popular nightspot Palm Court.
