Breaking News: President announces May 11 Elections
Guyanese will go to the polls on May 11, President Donald Ramotar announced this evening.
Ramotar has been forced to cut short his presidency by a year and a half after the opposition controlled legislature threatened to vote him out of office, charging lack of accountability.
He dodged a no-confidence vote on November 10 by suspending the Parliament, saying he hoped to have dialogue with the opposition to sort out thorny issues. But the opposition refused talks, and called for a recall of the Parliament or new general elections.
“As usual, I intent to invite international observers to be part of the elections process and I will expect the political parties, the security services and the people of Guyana to conduct themselves in a manner that would ensure continued peace and stability before, during and after the elections,” Ramotar said in an address to the nation.
