GGMC workers demand 35% increase in salaries

Screen shot 2015-01-06 at 9.29.15 PMGuyana Geology and Mines Commission workers resumed strike action one month after Natural Resources Minister Robert Persaud failed to honour an agreement which would see the workers receiving an 8% interim increase until negotiations with the Guyana Public Service Union are completed.

GPSU Industrial Relations Officer Jermaine Hermanstyne said no new ultimatum will be issued to the Ministry, but the workers are prepared to withhold their services until the agreement is signed.

Hermanstyne also disclosed that there are reports of senior officials in the Mines Commission attempting to use threats as a means of having workers return to work.

Workers are demanding a 35% salary increase but the ministry and the GPSU have failed to reach an agreement even though one board member in a letter has said that the commission has the capacity to pay workers the increase they are demanding
