A passenger out of Guyana was cooking up too much curry and rice for Christmas in New York. The agents at JFK became suspicious when the passenger arrived on Wednesday December 17th with several packets of curry and rice. They uncovered over 19 kilos of cocaine concealed in those containers in his luggage. The passenger is 55 year old ORAL Anthony CAINES.
Caines told the agents that he was paid $5,000 to bring the drugs into the United States The cocaine has a street value of half a million US dollars ($500,000). The passenger appeared in the US court yesterday and was remanded.
So far in the last month nearly fifty kilos ( a little over 100 lbs) have been transported out of Guyana into JFK New York in cases where arrests were made. Several kilos were intercepted at Caribbean ports and a few in Guyana. It is unclear how many kilos landed in the US and elsewhere undetected.
