Caines Cocaine in Curry and Rice
A passenger out of Guyana was cooking up too much curry and rice for Christmas in New York. The agents at JFK became suspicious when the passenger arrived with several packets of curry and rice. They uncovered over 19 kilos of cocaine concealed in the packages in his luggage off the flight from Guyana. The passenger is 55 year old ORAL Anthony CAINES. He was in possession of three bags, including two checked in suitcases and one carry on duffle bag. During questioning by the Customs and Border Patrol agents, ORAL CAINES claimed ownership of the three bags and their contents. When the Feds opened a red curry container found in the man’s luggage they found inside the container, under a layer of curry, a plastic bag. In fact, upon further inspection six red plastic containers of curry and two clear plastic containers of rice were located. Each container was found to have packages concealed inside.
The 55 year old Caines told the agents that he was paid $5,000 to bring the drugs into the United States
The weight of the cocaine recovered from the man’s luggage was 19.2336 kilos or about 42.4028 pounds with a street value of half a million US dollars ($500,000).
ORAL CAINES was placed under arrest and appeared in court yesterday. So far in the last month nearly 50 kilos have been transported out of Guyana into JFK New York in cases where arrests were made. Several kilos were intercepted at Caribbean ports and a few in Guyana. It is unclear how many kilos landed in the US and elsewhere undetected.
