Two men charged, granted bail in rape of Mahdia woman
The two Gobin and Persaud who hail from Leonora and Zeeburg respectively pleaded not guilty to the charges. They are expected to return to Court on November 10 according to Police Public Relations Officer Ivelaw Whittaker.
The case attracted national attention when the young woman with visible marks of violence accused the Police and hospital officials in Mahdia of failing to properly investigating her claim of being raped. One of the two men were instead charged with assault causing grievous bodily harm.
After the story broke, the police were instructed by the Director of Public Prosecution to broaden its investigation into the matter after several non-governmental organizations including the Women Miners Association, Red Thread and SASOD began calling for justice for the young woman. They have also been calling for retraining of police officers and the provision of rape kits at hospital countrywide.
The young woman also in a previous interview with Capitol News said she was concerned about the slothfulness of the investigation.
