Man charged in cocaine-in-tonic case
The matter was called this afternoon before magistrate Priya Beharry in the Georgetown magistrate’s court. The suspect Deon “Barney” Layne pleaded not guilty to the possession of 252 grammes of cocaine.
Layne was on the run for over two months after dropping over a parcel containing a bottle of tonic that later field tested to be cocaine, for his cousin Candacie Mc Garrel to take back to the United States.
It turned out that Mc Garrel refused to take back the parcel to the US. Her relatives then decided to use the tonic and immediately began feeling unwell. When they were rushed to the hospital Simone Pryce, Natasha George aged 36, Alex Beard 42, and 9 year old Jahkil Baird all died after ingesting the liquid cocaine.12 year old Jamal Waterman was the lone survivor.
