New GUYSUCO Board soon

Screen Shot 2014-07-11 at 7.18.37 PMThe new board to manage the operations of the Guyana Sugar Corporation should be announced next week by President Donald Ramotar.

Agriculture Minister Leslie Ramsammy during a meeting of the Parliamentary Economic Services Committee said the announcement of the board was delayed due to the failure of two nominees to state whether or not they will accept the positions.

Ramsammy however did say he was would share the names of the board members with A Partnership for National Unity Member of Parliament and Chairman of the Economic Services Committee Carl Greendige, who said he was grateful for the update.

Government was forced to  make changes to the old board given public outcry over  the low production, poor management and labour issues which plagued the industry.

The old board of the Sugar Corporation was headed by Dr. Rajendra Singh, who is now the corporation’s Chief Executive Officer.

Meanwhile, Singh during his presentation to the committee said he sees the industry returning to profitability under the new strategic plan.

Singh said the corporation is projected to produce 219,045 tonnes of sugar  as against the 216,000 tonnes  announced earlier by the Corporation.

However, People’s Progressive Party Member of Parliament warned the CEO against providing such figures to the committee before discussing them with the incoming board.
