Harsh treatment of Juveniles

Screen Shot 2014-07-11 at 7.18.10 PMA family member of one of the inmates of the New Opportunity Core is peeved this evening with some members of the Guyana police force. The woman Bezell Kenwell said her 13-year-old sister is being treated as a high profile criminal. This was the scene at the Georgetown Public Hospital yesterday when the police took two inmates to seek medical attention. The feet of the inmates were chained and they were escorted by the police out of the hospital, much to the amusement of scores of persons at the hospital including Kenwell who was there to accompany a friend when she saw her sister.

She said to her surprise no family member was informed that the girl was being taken to the hospital after complaining of feeling unwell.

Kenwell said as far as she knew her sister was at the NOC and she attempted to escape after complaining about bad treatment. She said her sister was transferred to the juvenile center at Sophia.

The woman said the girl was taken to the institution for loitering and not a high profile matter.

Over the past weeks the NOC has been in the news for various allegations of wrong doing on the part of the authorities.
