Guyana’s basketball players last night played their hosts the BVI team at the CBC championships and were completely annihilated in a 99-63 blowout. For the Guyanese Gordon Klaiber matched the game high with 17 points Captain Rawle Marshall was next best with 12 and Akeem Kanhai and Andre Ifill chipped in with 8 apiece. Guyana’s performance will have to improve today against the Us Virgin Islands if they are to contend in the championships. One of the key areas of concern is their rebounding and high turnovers. The team plays until the 5th. In the run-up to the tournament assistance was rendered to the team by Windjammer Hotel whose proprietor Carey Griffith said he was very happy to support the team in their preparations for the Championships.
The Guyana Telephone and Telegraph Company GT&T and John Fernandes ltd are two of the main sponsors of the team with support also coming from the Office of the President.
There was a small but vocal group of Guyanese supporters at the Guy vs Usa South NACRA finals held in Atlanta Georgia on Saturday last. In their own words they expressed joy at Guyana’s victory.
The team returned to Guyana and will now turn their focus on the IRB sevens tournament in December in Mexico.
And Jamaican Krishmar Santokie said he is looking forward to this year’s Limacol CPL tournament which bowls off in Antigua in 9 days’ time. Santokie is with the Guyana Amazon warriors which open the tournament against the Antigua Hawksbills. The Amazon warriors reached the finals last year and were beaten by the Jamaica Tallawahs.
