Waiting for torture case recommendations
Chairman of the Police Complaints authority Justice Cecil Kennard is recommending that one policeman be charged with causing grievous bodily harm another with perverting the course of justice and disciplinary action against an assistant superintendent of police an inspector and other ranks at the Sparendaam police station.
Kennard was speaking to this newscast after reviewing 34 statements and the medical report involving 19-year-old east coast youth Junior Thornton. The young man said that ranks at the Sparendaam Police station burnt his hands while he was in custody. The young man is alleging that police ranks soaked his hands with methylated spirits and set them alight.
Kennard said the file is already with the DPP and she is expected to make her recommendations and advise the police in the matter.
He said the use of excessive force by some members of the Guyana Police Force must stop. First it was Colwyn Harding who accused ranks of the Timehri police station of using a condom covered baton to sexually assault him, then it was 15 year old Alex Griffith who was shot in the mouth by a policeman and then 19 year Junior Thornton whose hands was burnt while in custody.
Thornton said he spent 72 hours in the lock ups.
He said the incident stemmed from a fight in the prison cell between himself and another man.
