Photos show Dino Bouterse’s arrest
The US has released both the diplomatic note and photographs of the younger Bouterse after he was arrested in Panama and was on the Flight to the US. The US is accusing Dino Bouterse of trafficking in over ten kilos of cocaine in a suitcase on a commercial airline via Trinidad and Tobago in July last year. He is facing even more serious terrorism charges in which the US is accusing him of links to Hezbollah. Bouterse claimed that how he was brought to the US from Panama was illegal and irregular, he was coerced into making statements while en route to the US and he should be provided with the evidence the US has of his involvement in drug trafficking and terrorism. He is however recorded as saying to his co-conspirator that they had hit the jackpot after undercover operatives offered over one million US to him.
The US prosecutors are defending how Bouterse was taken into custody and brought before court in Manhattan. Basically the US appears to have taken the position that these pictures tell the story. Bouterse while handcuffed is seen eating and having a book in his possession which according to the court documents he read during portions of the flight.
Bouterse who appeared in court in August of last year is charged with another Surinamese national, 29- year old Edmund Quincy Muntslag aka Blue and others known and unknown. The other defendant Muntslag was arrested in Trinidad and Tobago and has been fighting extradition.
His father the President hosted a successful festival of Carifesta (Caribbean Festival of Creative Arts) in Suriname during the same period his son is alleged to have been doing illegal business. The president has had his challenges with the Dutch legal system that accused him of drug running too.
