Police man facing torture charges
A police constable is under close arrest while a senior officer was transferred to the Canine division of the Guyana Police Force for allegedly covering up the torture allegation of 19-year-old East Coast youth Junior Thornton.
Thornton said that police at the Sparendam Police station burnt his hands while he was in custody.
According to the young man the police ranks soaked his hands with methylated spirits and set them alight.
Today police commissioner Seelall Persaud said the investigation should be wrapped up by today and the file should be with the chairman of the police complaints authority.
Thornton said two policemen were involved in the incident, however according to the commissioner he could not identify any of the policemen.
Thornton said he spent 72 hours in the lock ups after he was picked up for loitering. He said the incident stemmed from a fight in the prison cell between himself and another man.
The young man is still receiving medical attention at the burns unit of the Georgetown hospital.
