A local NGO has shifted its attention to the problem of violence in society
In spite of collaborative efforts the issue of violence whether domestic or gender-based remains a growing problem and can sometimes go unnoticed in society. For last year some 24 women were murdered in domestic related violence.
As more is still to be done when it comes to tackling gender-based violence, Executive Director of Merundoi Inc, Margaret Lawrence said her organization’s radio serial drama focuses on characters with negative behaviours who eventually turn around.
In February Merundoi signed a grant contract with the European Union to implement a two year project entitled Modelling and Reinforcement to Combat Domestic Violence.
According to the Executive Director the assistance has allowed for listening and discussion groups to be held in various communities. She said the episodes of the radio serial drama are usually played in groups followed by a discussion.
Ms Lawrence says she hopes society can get to understand that abuse is not only about lashing out at someone since there are other forms that go unnoticed.
Merundoi’s radio drama has been a hit over the last few years since the writers are able to encapsulate many of the current social problems into stories.
