Teen claims Police set hands alight

Screen shot 2014-06-03 at 9.35.34 PMA senior police and an investigator from the office of professional responsibility of the Guyana Police Force were taking statements from tortured teenager Junior Thornton at the hospital today.

Thornton said that police at the Sparendam Police station burnt his hands while he was in custody.

The young man is alleging that police ranks soaked his hands with methylated spirits and set them alight. He said he spent 72 hours in the lock ups.

Thornton said the incident stemmed from a fight in the prison cell between himself and anther man.

This latest incident come even as the Guyana Police Force is trying to restore its image and working to modernize the force.

Attorney at Law Dexter Todd who was once a member of the Guyana Police Force and who is providing legal representation for the victim said this action is not becoming of the police.

In another twist to the story the father of the victim reportedly took one hundred thousand dollars from the policeman at the center of the allegation.

The young man attorney sought to explain this development.

The 19-year-old Eastville Housing Scheme, Annadale east coast Demerara teen was police picked up for loitering last week.
