Prison inmates afraid to return
Relatives of inmates involved in the New Amsterdam Prison brawl are speaking out against what they believe is collusion among some prison wardens in the entire episode. In fact the family wants to know how acid and a cutlass passed security.
Late Friday afternoon, a prisoner entered a number of cells and chopped at least four prisoners, leaving them hospitalised at the Georgetown Public Hospital with broken limbs and severe lacerations about their bodies.
Initial reports suggested that a prison officer was checking the security of the cells when it was alleged that an inmate took away the keys, opened several cells of his associates and then proceeded to attack the inmates.
Those injured are Abdussalam Azimullah, Kwame Bhagwandin, Devendra Harrichand and Clarence Williams.
The ministry of Home Affairs has since promised a full investigation into the incident.
