Crisis looms at UG
The UGSSA is threatening to lockdown the University of Guyana Turkeyen Campus if the Administration goes ahead with proposals to cut staff as well as some programmes at the University. This is according to President of the UGSSA Dr Patsy Francis at a press conference at the University this morning. Dr Francis said the UGSSA and the unions are calling for an urgent meeting with the Administration to address these matters.
Dr Francis said they want to see reform at UG and not just cutting of specific programmes. She said the UGSSA has several proposals on the table one of which is to ask the University council to pressure the politicians to restore the monies cut from the Student Loan Agency. The student loan cuts were all part of the Ministry of finance budget that was cut by the opposition in the 2014 budget.
Dr Francis acknowledged that there needs to be a revision of fees but she noted that along with any reasonable increase must be a rise in the quality of the programmes offered and the conditions under which they are delivered.
