One killed, another captured and one on the run
Prison escapee and alleged cop killer Vickram Persaud was killed in a shootout with members of the Guyana Police last night at Fort Wellington on the west coast of Berbice. This was hours after he and three other men forced their way out of the Georgetown magistrate’s court holding facilities on Monday.
The police say an unlicensed .38 revolver was recovered from the scene.
Vickram Persaud of La Grange on the West Bank Demerara was charged in September last year with the Capital offence of murder.
The police said that he shot and killed Tactical Services Unit rank Michael Cumberbatch who was shot twice at point blank range inside his yard in North Sophia last year.
The motive for the killing of the policeman still remains a mystery.
The police recaptured this morning another escapee Randolph Marks; the young man was fingered in the murder of Patsan trading salesman Bharrat Ramcharan.
Ramcharan had just disembarked his vehicle on Sheriff and John Smith streets when Marks and another suspect Kevin France reportedly shot and robbed him. The man was rushed to the Woodlands Hospital where he succumbed.
Keron Cummings is the lone escapee still at large. Police sources told this newscast the Sophia man was fingered in a series of armed robberies. He was captured during an exchange of gunshots with the police in Sophia earlier this year after he attempted to rob a Sophia resident.
The fourth escapee Steve Bacchus was recaptured moments after he escaped in Hadfield street.
Following the escape, the police immediately intensified their security detail around the prison. You would recall that the court was recently repaired and facilities upgraded; it is unclear how the prisoners were able to cut the grill and the wood work without the police personnel around the court being aware as to what was taking place. Sources told this newscast at the time of the escape it was raining.
