One of Guyana’s promising boxers Deadly Denny Dalton is in the boxing wilderness and we ran into him in the city recently. He said he had to make the tough decision to walk away from the sport he loves because it was not enough to earn him a living here. Dalton who is now 39 last fought Trinidadian Joel Mc Rae at the cliff Anderson sports hall nearly 3 years ago. He lost that fight.
Dalton said he had been promised a lot but when those did not materialise he decided to go back to farming with his father.
Dalton competed in the Middle weight and light middleweight divisions and won titles at the Cabofe , Intercontinental and local levels in those divisions. He says he would gladly guide young boxers.
Deadly Dalton with a record of 16 wins 11 losses and 1 draw in 28 pro fights, does not rule out a comeback even at this age.
But Dalton’s father said he encouraged his son to walk away and concentrate on farming.
Lennox Braithwaite and Terrence Stewart secured joint third place for Guyana in the 600 yard shoot at the West Indies Fullbore championships underway in Spanish-town Jamaica. Braithwaite is the reigning x class champion and the Guyanse will be looking to come away with some improved performances.
