Backlash coming for Govt. work permit cancellation

GgrangerOpposition Leader David Granger reacting to government’s recent decision to revoke the work permit it had issued to the head of the USAID LEAD project.

LEAD is a project that is focused on democracy and governance designed to promote consensus building within the National Assembly while increasing citizen engagement.

Another aspect of the project also looks at civic education on local government with focus on civic engagement among women and youth. But since its inception the government has vehemently rejected the project saying that it intruded into Guyana’s sovereignty.

The Opposition Leader said the much needed public education is one that is most likely to be felt by the younger generation. Granger is still of the opinion that more preparation and education is needed about local government elections.

The last held local government election was in 1994. President Donald Ramotar in November last signed into law three of the four local government bills that were passed in the National Assembly that are necessary for the local polls.
