Historic City Hall is to be repaired and restored
Built in the late 19th century, City Hall has been left to fall apart over the years, but now the government says it is ready to put funding to get the structure back in shape. The announcement today from Cabinet Secretary Dr Roger Luncheon.
Dr Luncheon said that apart from public funds, there has been external interest in funding the project; he did not name those external interests. No price tag has been attached to what is expected to be a mammoth task to restore the building and maintain its architectural style, which is known as “fancy dress” Gothic.
City Hall was opened in July, 1889. Some ten years ago the Government of Guyana included the City Hall as part of a list of 13 National Monuments in a proposal to inscribe Georgetown as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The City Hall was accepted as a “tentative listing”.
