Sugar workers on Strike
According to National Association of Agricultural, Commercial and Industrial Employees (NAACIE, the industrial action is in keeping with an ultimatum sent by the Union to Guysuco informing them of their intention to do whatever it takes to cause Guysuco to pay salaries owed to its members in keeping with the Norman McLean Arbitration award and Collective Labour Agreement dated July 8, 2011.
According to NACCIE the issue has been the result of a very long battle by the union to cause the anomalies created by the across the board payment made to all workers regardless of their responsibilities to work, their productivity and importance of their jobs to the Corporation.
The union is preparing for the long haul as they continue to press their demands.
And the government this afternoon called out its supporters in the sugar industry to protest the opposition threats to cut the budget for the struggling sugar industry. The government has introduced several turnaround plans but none so far has produced the desired results.
