The Agriculture Minister says sugar industry will bounce back
The Agriculture Minister Dr Leslie Ramsammy says no one can be as disappointed and distressed about sugar than he is, but he says this year the industry will bounce back.
He said that major changes in management have been made and a new board will take control from July. After three years of failing to reach its targets, GUYSUCO is set to meet its 2014 target, the Minister said.
Touching on the troubled on Skeldon Factory, which has failed to live up to its promise to rescue the industry, Ramsammy again spoke of a better picture this year.
The 2014 budget proposes a $6B subsidy for the sugar corporation and Ramsammy outlined how this money will be spent.
The opposition parties have signaled their intention to deny approval for the $6 billion subsidy if the government does not put forward a viable turnaround plan for the industry.
