AFC MP Cathy Hughes calls on the government to pay Theatre Guild
AFC Parliamentarian Cathy Hughes has called on the government to unburden the Theatre Guild of Guyana of its huge electricity bill. The government owes the Guild $14 million for activities conducted during CARIFESTA six years ago.
Parliamentarian Cathy Hughes described the Theatre Guild as Guyana’s foremost theatrical institution and possibly the most prolific in output since its resuscitation during Carifesta 2008. However, she said the Guild is disintegrating owing in part to its huge electricity bill and wants the Government to Pay up.
In a recent letter to the opposition parties the Guild requested that this matter be brought before the House for consideration in the hope of recovering monies owed to the Guild. Hughes read part of that letter in the national assembly.
The Parliamentarian called on the Minister of Culture to urgently find a solution to the plight of Theatre Guild for its present condition contradicts what the Minister has said about the value given to the expansion and promotion of the arts.
