Amaila Hydro talks in full flow again
The government does not have the financing for the Amaila Falls Hydro Project, but President Donald Ramotar is hoping the money will come in from the Inter-American Development Bank, the IDB. The President said that the Board of the IDB is currently considering the project.
Even with no financing secured yet, the government has again budgeted its contribution to the project – US$80 million – out of funds from the forest-saving deal with Norway.
Last August, the developer for the project, Sithe Global, walked out of the project, saying it needed all parties in Parliament to support the project. However, President Ramotar indicated that Sithe Global never really did walk away from the project.
The 165 MW Amaila Falls hydropower project was one of the projects the government said it would fund out of the Norway funds.
