Tributes pour in for the former Deputy Speaker Deborah Backer

urlIt was only recently that Deborah Backer gave up her seat in the National Assembly due to illness, but no one prepared for her death; she was undergoing treatment overseas for can illness her family nor party publicly disclosed, but which those close to her say was cancer.
Today, her Parliamentary colleagues remembered her in glowing tributes. Basil Williams, the man who has since assumed Backer’s role as Deputy Speaker, lead tributes for a partnership for National Unity.
Backer has been described as one of the best brains in the Partnership for National Unity, which contested that last elections to unseat the ruling PPP. Backer’s personality often complemented her brilliance on Parliamentary rules and practices. Perhaps, the essence of Mrs Backer’s Parliamentary life was best captured by fellow front-bencher Joseph Harmon.
Mrs Backer incorporated her usual wit and charm in all the portfolios she championed in the National Assembly, but none were more notable than her jabs at the government on matters of National Security, such as when she took a box of sunshine cornflakes for Home Affairs Minister Clement Rohee.
Speaker of the National Assembly Raphael Trotman in a statement said Backer has made an indelible mark on the political fabric of Guyana, saying her monumental contribution in the fight against injustice, inequality, and intolerance will be everlasting.
Trotman said Backer had an indomitable and beautiful spirit and her passing will leave a void that is irreplaceable.
