Fire at GAAF building

GAAF fireIt was just after 3 this morning that the Guyana Fire Service was summoned to the east coast Demerara Ministry of Health Annex at Liliendall. The building which housed the Food Policy Division, Health Sciences, the Environmental health and the Veterinary Public Health Units was quickly reduced to this. When the tenders arrived the building was already engulfed. Neighbours said that they saw the fire coming from the top flat of the building.

Doodnauth a security guard on duty at the time told this Newscast that he was doing his normal checks just around three when he saw smoke coming from the electric meter.

Putting out the blaze was challenging to members of the fire service and the heavy winds at the time did not make the job any easier. Fire Chief Marlon Gentle.

Health minister Dr Bheri Ramsarran quickly got to the scene and he told this newscast that was a great loss to his ministry.

According to the ministry arrangements will be made to relocate the displaced staff at other ministry of health locations.

An investigation is currently underway to ascertain the origin of the fire.
