President of the Georgetown Chamber of Commerce Clinton Urling is calling out
President of the Georgetown Chamber of Commerce Clinton Urling is calling out the chairman of the Guyana Elections Commission Dr Steve Surjubally to clear the air on Gecom’s preparedness for the holding of the local government elections.
At a press briefing today Urling said that the elections should ideally be held before August 1st.
While the government is saying that the elections cannot be held this years the opposition is sticking to their guns that local government elections is important at this time.
Urling said the chamber was part of a group of stakeholders that put out a statement calling for the elections. Urling said that statement came in light of a meeting back in December where assurances was given by the chairman that he was ready for the elections.
Local government elections were last held in Guyana in 1994. Many in political circles feel that the elections will pave the way for the fixing of the many problems facing communities across the country. But President Donald Ramotar has flatly refused to assent to one of the bills necessary for holding the Elections.
