Cheddi Jagan Airport completion for August 2015
Over the weekend the President along with other government officials and engineers visited the site as works are scheduled to commence on some aspects of the building sometime this year.
The airport’s Chief Executive Officer Ramesh Ghir was reported saying that the project is proceeding as planned, and the contractor is currently carrying out excavation works at the end of the runway.
According to Ghir within a few months the designs for the terminal building and construction works on that building will start.
The airport expansion project is expected to cost US 150 Million dollars, with funding from the Chinese government. The opposition parties had expressed some concerns with some of the conditions set out by the Chinese bank funding the project.
Just last year the project hit a hurdle when the Parliamentary opposition voted down 5.6 Billion dollars allocated for the country’s transport sector in last year’s budget of which the airport expansion was a key component.
The project will also upset the lives of hundreds of persons in North Timeri since they are close to the airport and the Ministry has been seeking to relocate them.
Some of the new features at the country’s International Airport will include a new terminal building with eight boarding bridges, elevators and CCTV. The runway is also expected to be extended by some 35 hundred feet.
