Passenger accused of failing to declare
A young Guyanese 30 year old Vilton Clarence Bourne was taken off a Caribbean Airlines flight in New York after he was found with over 35,000 USD. The young man was set to depart JFK for Guyana on Wednesday when he was challenged by Customs Border Patrol Agents about currency regulations for departing passengers. Passengers are only allowed to take under 10000 USD without declaring it. Ten thousand and higher must be declared.
Bourne claimed that he understood the regulation and signed that he was transporting 9000 USD. The agents in verifying the amounts said that he presented 10000 then they found the same amount in each suitcase he had. In addition he was found with a wallet that had over 5000 USD.
He was arrested and appeared in court. He was not granted bail over the weekend but retained legal counsel yesterday. He is facing charges of evading the currency regulations and concealing the money in his luggage in an attempt to transport the money outside of the US.
Over the years agents tracking various cases have followed the money usually leading to the cracking of important related investigations. Several Guyanese have been held over the years for the same offence both attempting to bring money into or take it out of the US without detection.
