Who put the cocaine in the Achar?
The latest case was on the Guyana end where a young woman and an elderly gentleman were held for trying to smuggle over eight kilos of cocaine. They were before the courts today for the bust that occurred on Saturday at the CJIA. Those charged are 38 year old Shabakie Odie and 78 year old Winston Blades. They were both remanded until their next court appearance.
On the other side in New York a 44 year old Guyanese man, Sheldon Meertens is in custody there for exactly the same method of concealment and nearly the same amount of cocaine. Meertens slipped out through the security at the CJIA on January 31 with one suitcase, one duffel bag and one carry-on.
The Customs and Border Patrol Agents discovered that the suitcase and duffel bag had cocaine concealed in what it called a “food product”.
Over the last month there have been busts in Guyana, New York and Barbados and agents are looking at a group of persons including a deportee who may be the facilitators of the recent upsurge in the trade.
