Upset over pay increase
The problem is that the workers who include managers and engineers are not represented by any union and they feel they are being taken advantage of. The workers are calling for similar treatment to all categories of workers of the sugar industry since according to them they are the only set of workers that are always on call.
To compound the problem a source told this newscast that currently foreign engineers are in Guyana working to revive the struggling sugar industry. The workers say they feel disrespected since according to them those foreign engineers will be paid hefty sums with added benefits.
GAWU and NACCIE workers were given a 4% increase across the board for last year but to date the senior staff workers were not given any increase.
The senior staff make up about 3% of the work force countrywide and they are threatening to take industrial action if the authorities continue to refuse to look into their concerns. In addition the workers are also requesting a face to face meeting with the chairman of the GUYSUCO board and its members to address their grievances. A new board is expected to be installed later this year. Many believe that the shortage of cane is one of the many plights facing the sugar industry.
