The issue of doping in sport in Guyana has never been an issue of concern to local sporting bodies until the recent suspension of power-lifter Gumendra Shewdas by the world governing body for that sport. Although Powerlifting is not an Olympic Sport President of the Guyana Olymmpic association was asked how will that suspension affect the image of sports in Guyana.
The World Anti-Doping Agency WADA is the body responsible for testing athletes and Juman- Yassin said he has pleaded with sporting associations of Olympic Sports here to comply with the basic requirements of this body one of which is to submit a schedule of activities for each athlete so that the Doping agency could contact them at any time.
Yassin said one of the measures against the athletes can be not to select them if they cannot comply.
xThe 18 year old Shewdass created waves in August last year when he became Guyana’s youngest powerlifting Champion competing in the Sub Juniors class at the World Juniors Powerlifting championships in Killeen Texas
And Coach of the Guyana Cricket Team Eusan Crandon said preparations for the West Indies cricket Board regional 50 over championships are coming along well. He was speaking at the Everest Cricket ground today at the first practice match for the squad.
The squad has been encamped for just about 10 days now and according to Crandon he is confident that whoever makes the final fourteen they will be able to give a good account of themselves.
Fitness is also an area the selectors are paying keen attention to and Crandon said the addition of some personnel from the GDF will be a big boost to what they are doing.
The regional 50 overs take place at the end of January in Trinidad and Tobago.
And as the WI prepare for their final ODI against NZ Wicketkeeper Denesh Ramdinn is calling on the batsmen to come to the party. He also wants to see more support for young Jason holder who he says has been the best bowler on tour. Ramdin says the tour which came just after another in India has been long and hard and the players want to end it on a high note. He believes that the fielding will also have to be improved in order to keep the team competitive.
