GRA commissions new container scanner
Finance Minister Dr Ashni Singh has called on private Sector companies to come into greater compliance with the country’s laws. He made that call this afternoon at the launch of a new mobile container and vehicle scanner. The scanner was donated by the Chinese government to help the GRA verify what the shippers say are in the containers are indeed just that.
The scanner which looks just like a truck when not in use has been touted as state of the art with exceptional penetration capabilities which should assist in picking up of illegal substances such as narcotics guns and ammunition, explosives and other uncustomed goods. But according to GRA head Khurshid Sattaur the main aim for them at the GRA is really to deter shippers from doing anything illegal.
The Chinese Ambassador to Guyana said his Government was very happy to follow through on the agreement he signed a few weeks ago with the finance Minister for the acquisition of the scanner. The scanner which cost just over 4 million US dollars will be operated by a team from NUCTECH who will guide the locals There is also a one year guarantee agreement.
