Le Repentir Cemetery remains an eyesore

cemetry story 30thThe Le Repentir cemetery here in Georgetown for some persons brings back memories of the moment they bid farewell to their loved ones for the last time.

Overgrown vegetation has started a new trend in this area since it is slowly becoming a dumping ground for garbage that can be seen at almost at every entrance. Meet Abdool Azeez who has worked here for the last 30 years.

According to him his job as the foreman is one he takes with pride but there are persons trying to break his spirit.

He says the current condition of the cemetery is because there is a shortage of workers and the Mayor and City Council have turned a blind eye to the needs of the cemetery.

Just last week the Peoples Progressive Party General Secretary joined the many other stakeholders in condemning the present conditions of the Cemetery.

On the issue of available space in the cemetery, Azeez told this newscast that the burial site has a 10 year life span remaining.

Although the sexton is saying there is more space for the dead, some funeral homes say access to those spaces is the challenge. For them the cemetery should be declared closed and other burial places used.
