City businessman puzzled by strange fire next to his establishment
It was around four this morning when fire of unknown origin gutted an old wooden house at 161 Waterloo Street and scorched another buliding. Businessman Nazimul Drepaul who lives next door to the burnt out building said he heard some unusual noises coming from the building shortly before the house became engulfed in flames. He immediately alerted the Guyana fire service.
His brother Tajmul would normally operate his mechanic shop from the same building and told reporters that last Saturday an attempt was made to burn the building but the fire was quickly put out.
He said he lost around 500,000 dollars in spare parts and his working tools. He said the building had no GPL power and was unoccupied at the time of the fire. The Guyana Fire service received praise from residents for containing the fire. An investigation is on the way by the Guyana Fire Service.
