Mandela remembered as a true fighter for human rights
The voice of Former Foreign Minister in the Forbes Burnham Administration and former commonwealth secretary General Sir Shridath Ramphal. It was the efforts of the Commonwealth among and other organisations in around world that brought pressure on the rest of the world and even in the Commonwealth that secured the release of Mandela from prison.
Ramphal recalled that his house in London was the first place Mandela visited when he came out of prison.
Sonny Ramphal as he is fondly known was in Guyana for a private engagement at the International conference centre at Liliendaal. He never let the Commonwealth forget that Mandela was in prison even as then British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher known as the Iron Lady went against the Commonwealth’s position on sanctions against the apartheid regime in South Africa.
