Union opposed to town clerk selection. Industrial action likely
The Guyana Local Government Officers Union is giving the ministry of local government 72 hours to rescind the appointment of Carol Sooba as town clerk or face industrial action. Embarrassed over the appointment of union president Dale Beresford said the appointment of Sooba was an insult, an injustice to the process of transparency, integrity and professionalism.
Beresford who was a part of the panel interviewing persons for the post of town clerk said Sooba was the least qualified and her appointment was more a political one. Deputy mayor Patricia Chase Green had strong words for the authorities on this latest move by the government.
Paul Clark was tipped for the job after the panel, which also includes the PS from the ministry of Local government found him to be the most qualified out of the four applicants.
And Royston King public relations officer of the council who also applied for the job has written to the permanent secretary seeking to get an understanding of the methodology used for the selection and appointment of Sooba as town clerk.
