Combined opposition votes down private sector commission petition in parliament

GINAThe government can expect no easy passage to the anti-money laundering bill as both the APNU and AFC have signaled their intention to vote against its passage in the national assembly.

APNU is saying that the bill should be sent back to the select committee to get a more complete bill. AFC chairman Khemraj Ramjattan said that his party would support the APNU and wants to see the procurement commission implemented and become operational.

Ramjattan said the procurement commission is necessary in his view to halt corruption.

The government is saying that if the bill is not passed before the end of the month Guyana can be blacklisted by major financial institutions in the region and further afield.
