GECOM ready for local government elections.

royo eleChairman of the Guyana Elections commission Dr Steve Surujbally said that the commission is ready for the holding of local government elections.

But one of the setbacks so far is the refusal of president Donald Ramotar to assent to the four local government bills.

Surujbally said currently GECOM is conducting continuous registration, which will end in November.

Local government elections were last held in Guyana in 1994. Within recent years, numerous Neighbourhood Democratic Councils have been disbanded and Interim Management Committees have been installed

And the commission is browsing through 14 applications for the vacant post of chief elections officer. You would recall the commission refusal to renew the contract of long standing CEO Gocool Boodoo , that was after Boodoo was blamed for mishandling the 2011 elections results. It was Vincent Alexander who said that Boodoo’s action was deliberate in trying to give the PPP a clear majority.

Submission of applications for the chief executive officer post at GECOM closed on September 30th.
