Matthew Walter said Agriculture must be placed on the front burner.
Dominica’s Minister for Agriculture and Forestry, Matthew Walter wants to see Governments within the Caribbean putting Agriculture on the front burner since the region can become a potential food basket for the world.
The Minister was speaking at a closing press conference for the Ministerial Meeting of the Council for Trade and Economic Development (COTED) on Friday. The Special meeting with CARICOM Agriculture Ministers was the final event for this year’s Caribbean Week of Agriculture.
He said if Agriculture is well planned and placed on the front burner then issues such as rural poverty, unemployment, hunger and other social problems will be comprehensively addressed.
The Dominican Agriculture Minister said one cannot ignore that some countries are hindered by many constraints particularly in terms of the availability of sufficient financial resources. Walter says it is an issue that must be addressed at all cost.
Attracting more youths in the sector is another area he wants to see pushed by governments around the region.
