SPORTSAnd Guyana’s Master Powerlifter Winston Stoby continues to defy the odds with his rich form at the World masters Championships. Stoby gained a Silver Medal in the 74kg Catergory individual lift with a total of 551 and a Quarter Pounds. He was 38 lbs behind Greg Page of the US who was the favourite going into the Championships.

But it was not all smooth sailing for Stoby as he placed last in the 2nd lift but Stoby rebounded to claim silver again behind Page in the deadlift lifting just over 837.90 lbs.

The lift brought Stoby’s overall total to 657 and a half kilogram behind page with 697 and a half.  A Japanese lifter copped the bronze.

Stoby got support from the Australian National Masters Powerlifting team which was asked by the Guyana Amateur Powerlifting Federation to assist Stoby on stage since they could not afford to send a coach to the Championships.

The GFF is caught between a rock and a hard place as it is still to make a decision on the staging of two football tournaments for the year end That’s the Kashif and shanghai and the GFA banks DIH sponsored tournaments.. The Kashief and Shanghai Organisation year-end tournament is in limbo and the organization feels badly done by the GFF who it says has not responded to the affiliate that applied for the tournament.

The organization is also prepared to take their concerns to the highest level and co-founder of the organization Aubrey Major is preparing to travel to the Cayman Islands where Concacaf President Geoffrey Webb lives to seek an audience with him. Major said they are hoping for the best.

The men said they have followed all the requirements and are not prepared to move their tournament dates to Easter next year in order to accommodate the GFA /banks Tournament. Last year there was a split in  footballing circles with the holding of the two tournaments separately.

And in GCB/Pepsi 50 over cricket Demerara on the back of a good all round performance from Captain Chris Barnwell pulled out a 2 wkt win to send Demerara into the semi-finals where they await the winner of the next round clash between Berbice and Essequibo who were both beaten by Demerara.

Baarnwell and Chandrika were the man scorers with 72 and 62 . Barnwell also took 4/69  to earn himself his second man of the match award in the tournament
