Guyana Women Miners Organisation rescued more Women today including a Trinidadian
A Trinidadian woman was one of two persons rescued on Friday by the Guyana Women Miners Organisation as part of their trafficking in persons campaign. The rescue operation took place at 14 mile Issano a mining area in region 7.
One of the Women is said to be 3 months pregnant and claimed they were held hostage by a Shop-owner for 3 weeks until they repaid monies allegedly owed to the Shopkeeper.
The Women reported that they were persuaded by the Shop-owner to come and work with her but things got sour when she demanded extra money for food and accommodation. The women reportedly told GWMO President Simona Broomes that things got ugly for them when they told their employer they wanted out. The Police are said to looking into this latest incident. Broomes and her organization have recently been highlighting the issue of trafficking in persons in Guyana’s mining districts. Broomes was also recognized by US Secretary of State John Kerry.
