8-year-old and 11-year-old die in Lodge fire

fireA community was plunged into mourning early Sunday morning after two children met a fiery death at their Joseph Pollydore, Lodge home.

Dead are 11-year-old Adam Marshall and his 8-year-old sister Shania. They were reportedly trapped inside their home; unable to escape. The building carried grillwork, which is commonly used to keep out bandits.

According to reports, the fire started just around 4 am on Sunday and quickly engulfed the two-story building. A family of five lived at the bottom flat of the building, which according to reports, had no electricity.

The mother of the dead children Odessa Thomas and her 13-year-old son managed to escape, but not without burns about their bodies.

Neighbours told the media that they heard the children screaming for help but by the time the alarm was raised the fire was out of control.

Fire Chief Marlon Gentle was on the scene and he told the media that from an initial investigation conducted so far, the fire started somewhere within the bedrooms of the building.

Firefighters were able to contain the blaze from spreading to any of the nearby buildings.

Neighbours told the media that two months ago the Fire Service was called in after a fire of unknown origin occurred at the same building.
