Pensioners stand to benefit from financial assistance for the payment of electricity charges
With over six thousand pensioners on its current list, the Guyana Power and Light (GPL) is now in the process of updating that very list. Based on parliamentary approval, pensioners stand to benefit from an annual provision of 20 thousand dollars as assistance for the payment of electricity charges.
On August 13, GPL concluded its pension verification exercise to determine who is eligible for the electricity subsidy.
Pensioners were being asked to visit the company’s head office on Main Street and produce a form of identification and a proof of address so that both pieces of information can be verified.
The senior citizens would have also had to produce their 2013 pension book so that the address can be cross referenced against the address of the active GPL account.
The Power Company said the process was a way to match the list provided by the Ministry of Human Services and Social Security.
Just last month the company would have received the very list from the Ministry with some 12 thousand pensioners from Regions two, three, four, five, six and seven.
The sum of $590 Million dollars was allocated as part of this year’s National Budget for this annual benefit afforded to pensioners.
The subsidy to assist pensioners pay for their electricity is expected to be paid out by next month.
