Import-Export company owner busted with cocaine in ochro sentenced to 5 years in prison
The 24-year-old who appeared before the Magistrate told the Court that he had full knowledge of the drugs contained in the vegetables and admitted that he conspired with others to do the shipment.
It was on August 12 that ranks of the Police Narcotics Branch intercepted some 15 kilograms of cocaine that was discovered in 99 boxes of Ochroes at the Timehri International Airport.
The Airport in a statement today said that in order to conceal the illicit substance, the perpetrators cut the heads off the ochroes, removed the seeds, placed the illicit substance inside and then glued the heads back on.
The vegetable was part of some 195 boxes that were destined for a Bronx, New York address the Airport stated.
Despite the craftiness of individuals, the Cheddi Jagan International Airport Corporation security team says it will continue to work along with Government security agencies to crack down on the illegal drug trade.
For years, drug traffickers have been pushing out cocaine in all manner of vegetables and other items and attempted to use the airport as a transhipment point.
